LLU invites to celebrate Latvia's independence day

November is the month of patriotism, when we are united in our hearts and deeds with Latvia, as well as we honour our heroes who selflessly guard and have guarded our country. We invite everyone belonging to the LLU family - students, employees, graduates and cooperation partners - to celebrate the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Latvia individually and to light up the heart in spite of the dark time of November by attaching a ribbon of the Latvian flag.

On the Proclamation Day of the State of Latvia, November 18, we invite you to take part in the lighting of Jelgava Palace Park and Academic Road, when everyone will be able to light their own candle and place it together with the other candles, creating light signs.

While the most beautiful and heartfelt songs of Latvia will be played, the lighting of candles is planned from 17.00, but it will be possible to supplement it with new candle flames throughout the evening.

LLU Academic Road is a historical road that leads from Lielā Street to Jelgava Palace and is currently used only by pedestrians. Since September 2012, a special memorial plaque has been placed by freshmen every September, thus symbolizing the beginning of studies, the commitment to study well, to hold the honour of one's higher education institution and to become a place to meet after graduation.

On the evening of November 16 at 18.30 the relay "Torch" will take place in the yard of Jelgava Palace for the 49th time, which takes place every year in the month of patriotism - November. This historical tradition was started on November 17, 1971 by Edvīns Feldmanis, a lecturer at the then Latvian Academy of Agriculture (now the Latvian University of Life Sciences and Technologies), and today the LLU Sports Center continues with the fastest and most active students. The aim of the relay race is to honor the patriotic people of the university and Latvia. Everyone is welcomed to participate or to support other students. Faculty sports coordinators will provide information on the opportunity to participate in the relay.

In addition, from November 16 to 22, we invite you to include the surroundings of Jelgava Palace in your walking route, as the facade of the castle will be decorated with lights that will allow everyone to feel the holiday at every step. Jelgava Palace Park is a special place, which was started in 1817 on the site of the former castle ramparts. The park has canals, bridges, several castle buildings and the Governor's Island, which makes it one of the most beautiful parks in Jelgava.

Let's light a candle for peace, quiet and understanding on our country's birthday!

We invite you to follow the epidemiological safety measures established in the country, as well as to observe all fire safety regulations and take care of each other during the lighting of candles.
